Don't know if this helps, but when I did a child protection course recently we were advised to allow the child to talk freely, do not push the child or ask leading questions, reassure the child that they have done nothing wrong and is right to come to you for help but do not promise secrecy as information is likely to need to be passed on. Remain friendly, unjudgmental, open and encouraging without leading.

Look at the guidelines your "Local Safeguarding Childrens Board" There is a wealth of imformation on their sites and are the procedures you should be following. Also look at your Safeguarding Policies and quote from that and expand by saying how you work to your policy.
