Quote from page 43 of Understanding Child Development 0-8 yeas Jennie Lindon & Kathy Brodie

Brunner (1990) further developed Vygotsky's theoretical perspective into the concept of the spiral curriculum, of how children learn through discovery, with the direct help of adults, and by returning again and again to the same materials or ideas. Brunner proposed that children were able to extend their understanding over a period of years, because later learning could build on what they had learnt previously, through sensitive help from adults. Lilian Katz shares this cyclical concept, in that children need to revisit ideas and experiences. The practical implication is that supportive adults need to provide a flexible learning environment, in which children can easily access and use resources, exploring connections that make sense for them now.
