Hi, you'll find up to date information on the NHS website and your setting will also have a policy that explains the advice that it shares with parents - ask for a copy :)

and from page 46 of this EYE handbook on amazon.o.uk (search inside for the word sudden) quote:

Sudden infant death syndrome which is commonly know as 'cot death', occurs when babies die in their sleep without any warning. While the cases of sudden infant death syndrome are not fully understood, there are some steps parents and early years settings can take to reduce the risk of it occurring. It is now good practice to make sure that, when babies are put down to sleep, the following measures are taken:

• Babies should be put on their back to sleep with their feet touching the end of the cot. This is called 'feet to foot' position
• Cot duvets should not be used as they can cause a baby to overheat.
• Blankets should be tucked in at shoulder level so as to avoid the baby's head becoming covered.
• Babies should be put down to sleep in cool rooms of around 16-20c
• Babies should not be in smoky environments or held by anyone who has just been smoking (after smoking, it takes 20 minutes for an individual's oxygen levels to return to normal and a baby who is being held by someone who as just been smoking is likely to inhale some of the toxic substances found in cigarettes)
