Hello Helen N

When children are playing at the same time they are learning and developing, this is very important as children learn through play and at the same time it’s fun and exciting, so luckily children enjoy doing the activities that develop their skills and development. Play is an essential part of growing up and it’s critical to ensure children reach their full potential, Play helps children understand and learn about the world they live in and they can discover, explore, make choices and test their theories, play also builds children’s self esteem and playing with what they know only to become successful in it, Children can build their social skills during play for example starting off with nonliving objects such as dollies or teddy’s and practising their interactive skills, but later on playing with other children as they learn to share, take turns, assert themselves, and begin to empathise with others. Providing that children have a positive and enjoyable environment with a wide range of activities that cover each area of development (Physical, emotional, social, intellectual/cognitive, language and communication) then they are able to develop a variety of skills that they will learn and help them understand about the world and help them come to terms with the changes in their lives.

Hope this helps.
