Hi, this links to the planning process and how a setting gather ideas to satisfy and extend children's learning interest.

One way is through observations and assessment of the child engaged in play or showing interest .. to look at sourcing you could ask ..

-- what choices can the child make
-- what is the child focussing their interest on ie. what is it they really like
-- what do they dislike
-- how does the child interact with others
-- how does the child respond to different situations and routines
-- what can the child do
-- how does the child like to learn
-- does the child have any individual needs

Child's own views - how might these be sought

The Mosaic approach designed by Alison Clark and Peter Moss helps to see how it's possible to listen to children about their environment, what they like, dislike and feel is important. The methods involved with this include map maping, photography, asking children to lead adults on tours of the setting pointing out their play spaces or areas that they enjoy spending time in, how that time is spent and the resources they choose .. book preview on google and amazon

The educational approach of Highscope emphasises active participatory learning, encouraging children to engage in hands-on experiences - adult and child participation
