Do we need food hygiene certificates?

Hi,

Hope someone can help! The EYFS states that 'In group provision, all staf
involved in preparing and handling food must receive training in food hygiene.' Does this mean we have to do the Level 2 Food Hygiene course? Or does one person go on the course and train the rest of the staff? I am currently studying towards my Level 3 and I've heard that some courses cover the Food Hygiene qualification but mine doesnt so need to find out if I have to do it.

Thanks!

Hi yes each member of staff that's not had this training and is part of the food handling process, will need to. Unless the colleague who undergoes the training achieves the necessary qualification to become a trainer everyone will need to complete their own.

There are a few online providers, you might also find your local early years department funds or sources food hygiene training that offer certificates for the settings in their area - find your local gov website.

Safer food resources on food.gov.uk and FSA in Wales are recommending this accredited, city & guilds L2 certificate provider virtual college

Thank you Ruth! My colleagues seem to think that they don't have to do the course as it's not legislation (according to them), just good practice but I am definitely going to do the course. Thank you for the links, I think I will be using virtual college.

ahh, you'd be right to point out that everything in EYFS is embedded in legislation section 39 of the childcare act xx

Best wishes with the course :)

It says TRAINING it doesn't specify what the training is. a unit in the level 2 or 3 which covers could be argued as sufficient. The new EYE covers it in 1.3

I completed the L2 Food Hygiene course last night and really enjoyed it. Informative but also interactive and to the piont I went with Virtual College in the end and one of my colleagues will be doing her course over the weekend. Thank you for recommending them Ruthierhyme, much appreciated. xx
