:dizzy:How opportunitiesare provided for children to assess and take risks and face challenges..........is this in how we provide resources for the children to choose?

How the use of culturally and developmentally appropriate activities and experiences can support learning and development? again is this in supplying resources in the setting which will encourage children to be aware of different cultures in society Im not very good at writing exactly what im thinking lol its my age .......

I would take it to mean that !

Perhaps explain how these activities are chosen, at staff meetings, with parents, by looking at what play things/ activity resources you have available and seeing how they can be used in different ways to challenge and extend the children. As an example, Tea towels.. they can be used to dry up dishes, tucked in a waistband as chase tails, memory game covers, picnic cloths, sheets & blanets, flying carpets (not very good ones though :D) head cloths, capes, cloaks, flags, a giants handkerchief ~ by allowing the children to access and explore these activites they'll discover many more things about them, take risks and face challenges ..

I'd understand the second part to be taking into account all cultural aspects of the children, their famillies, friends, the wider community and anything else they may experience culturally and then together, provide activities that are developmentally appropriate, stimulating and offer the opportunity to explore them all equally.

If anyone has completed this unit and can suggest more .. please do ..

Thanks for your reply. I also wrote how for some children just "having a go" at something new would be a challenge for them. Also taking a risk on the climbing frame judging for themselves how to climb or where to jump off would also be a challenge they need to assess the challenge and decide if they can manage for themselves. Also allowing children to deal with conflict for themselves would teach them to face the challenge of maybe saying "no" if we didnt give them this opportunity they would not learn how to face the challenge if we intervened too soon. Do you think im on the right track? As you may guess I do woffle on a bit but i figure if i write enough maybe the answer will be in their somewhere. lol

Im still stuck on the second part tho, dont feel ive got enough info im not sure if ive got to say what activities are provided to show this can support learning and development.

Every activity on offer should reflect the diversity of culture that is, on the first hand in the immediate environment. Then depending on how the activity extends itself can encorporate culture from the wider community.

Ethnicity, beliefs, dress, preferences, home, diet, illness, thoughts, opinions .. and much more !

Providing culturally & developmentally appropriate activities isn't so much preparing an activity to specifically look at culture, rather it's to include the very many cultural diversities that are around & a part of us. :dizzy:

If a child were to present an object in Pre School,

It could be used to look at and explore a specifically cultural issue or it could be shown/seen by others and their own individuality allowed to develop the discussion.

Either or both of these options can be used when everyone is considered at a stage where the information and answers given is suitable for age & development.

The Child who owns the object may not be happy to share and discuss it with others - it may have a very specific use and meaning to them.
Their point of view and reasoning is of paramount importance .. if the situation/stage of development is right, they can be helped to understand that by bringing it to pre school it has the chance of drawing attention of others and may invite thier cultural views, opinions and thoughts on it.

Some points to consider - from Tameside.gov.uk uses a Q & A format for Parents but it can also be used to help evaluate activities and practices to see if they are culturally & developmentally appropriate.

Supporting learning in activities include encouragement, patience, praise and by being interested.

These are a few possible planning/policy/areas of learning ideas ...

Food activities - Culturally appropriate considers all the needs of those who will or might take part in the activity.
Craft activities - Culturally appropriate may mean cancelling/adapting or changing direction of a craft activity if someone is poorly, has a skin allergy or maybe dislikes the activity intention/materials.
Books - Culturally approproiate may take into account the wishes of others in not being part of a story book session.
Toys and Activities (games, jigsaws, pictures) - should be culturally appropriate in reflecting the diversity of Children attending, parents, staff and anyone else appropriate to your setting.
Trips and Outings - A concensus of opinion on where & what trips are arranged should be done to ensure culturally appropriate decisions are made.
Staff meetings - should be Culturally appropriate by requesting a list from everyone about which wine & biscuits to take along :proposetoast: :D lol, times and venue may be a consideration for cultural inclusion.

just to add to this culterally appropriate could include having dressing up clothes in the home corner from different cultures for all children to access or providing meals/snacks appropriate to the beliefs of a child and provoiding activities that celebrate cultural festivals.
