Hi on page 25 of the level 2 CYPW handbook it states:

Quote

What is equality

Children all have the right to access chances that will support their present and future life. We cannot make all children equal or the same - they are different from one another. However, we can aim to offer each Unique Child equality of opportunity suited to their individual needs and requirements.

practitioners need to understand and value individuality of each child, taking into account each child's characteristics and the ways they differ from others. This is the first step to being able to offer equality of opportunity to each child.

What is inclusion?

For each child to have equal opportunities, settings must ensure that they and their families are fully included in the setting, taking into account the diversity of the children and families who come to the setting. Inclusion is the process of making this happen. Working towards inclusion involves striving to remove barriers to children and their families.
  • being able to take full advantage of what a setting has to offer (participate)
  • feeling that they are truly welcomed and valued in the setting.
It involves:
  • finding out it there are barriers tat may be preventing children and families feeling that they can belong to the setting and participate in it
  • taking action to overcome those barriers
What is discrimination?

Even young children can experience discrimination asa result of:
  • the colour of their skin and other aspects of their ethnicity (such as their facial features or hair)
  • the traditions and way of life of their family, arising from culture and religion
  • their disability
  • their gender
  • their social background - the class or socio-economic group of their family
  • the structure or composition of their family (for example single parent or same-gender parents)
Discrimination hampers children's opportunities by denying them the advantages that other children have. They and their families may see themselves as excluded from certain settings and roles in life. This may prevent them progressing and experiencing success in their lives.

Prejudice
One of the main sources of discrimination is prejudice. Prejudice is shown in mamy ways - in the way people talk about one another, and in the way they treat eone another. it arises from a judgement or opinion, often negative, of a person or group, made without careful consideration of accurate, relevant information. When people are worried or unsettled by diversity, the result may be prejudice.

You may of encountered prejudiced thinking at first hand, or read about the way some people express prejudiced ideas. For example, you may have found that some people think that black people whose ethnic origins relate to Africa are less capable and intelligent than white or European or Asian people, and are only able to succeed in the fields of sport or music. Some people still think that males are automatically more important than females, simply because of their gender. Disabled people often find themselves treated as of less value and seen as less capable of leading independent lives than non-disabled people. Other people experience such prejudiced thinking because of their sexuality or their appearance.
