In the past I have worked with a young person who had to have the doors locked when travelling in the car. This young person also had to have a member of staff travel in the back with them.

This restrictive intervention was due to a negative situation that the young person had created whereby they had tried to get out of the car whilst it was in motion. For this restrictive intervention to be passed as an appropriate safety measure the young person’s parent’s, the young person’s social worker, the house manager, police, company operations manager and also OFSTED had to be informed that such a restrictive intervention was going to be put in place.

With regards to safeguards that are put in place due to the use of physical interventions. All staff are trained in the most recent PRICE techniques.

Staff are also trained in how to verbally de-escalate a situation.

Young people and also the people that place young people into our environment are informed that this is a style of restrictive intervention that is used should a situation require it.

During a physical intervention all details are recorded and it is advised that a member of staff should never hold a young person on their own. Before physical interventions are used a young person must be informed, verbally, to stop the behaviour or physical intervention will be used.

Physical interventions must always be used as a last resort and all other de-escalation techniques must be exhausted.
