Interest Table

Hi All

Please, is there anybody out there who can save my husband from the pain of hearing me going on about my interest table?? :thumbsdow:

I have an observation on 8 January, and I am contemplating the interest table being based upon a winter theme.

I was going to lay a pale blue sheet on the table to give the illusion of it being cold, I have purchased some fake snow to give it a winter theme. I thought I could put the 'snow' on a large tray and allow the chidren to drive the little cars through it (as they seem to love driving the cars through anything!), I have some cuddly snowmen and polar bears to sit behind the snow and was also thinking about using my led blue lights at the back of the table for visual stimulation and effect. I also thought about having some winter leaves on the table and ask the children if they would like to do some rubbings of them, after exploring how they feel, eg crispy, crunchy etc. Also, from somewhere, I am on the lookout for toy animals that hibernate, and make a little bed for them, asking the children if they know any animals that hibernate and why etc. I am going to visit the library too, for any picture books to do with winter.

I have managed to convince myself that this all sounds complete rubbish and that the children won't be interested (not too good for an interest table!).

I have also looked at the criteria and see that it also needs to promote positive images of people. The only thing I can think to do is use the multi cultural dolls and wrap them up in warm clothes/blankets etc.

It also states that it needs to be aromatic but I can't think of what to do here - any ideas??!!!

If there is anybody out there who can possibly help in any way, I would be so grateful. I am having sleepness nights over this now and I am terribly worried!

Thanks ever so much for any help, however small!

Andrea xx:With love:

hi andrea i had to write about this it sound good have you thought about puting fresh pine cones you got make sure all the five sences smell taste touch see and hear i put down some bells so children can shake the bells to make a jingle sound

It does sound absolutely great!!

There are many ways you could look for positive images. You could use a picture of FC/santa as a prompt for discussing what happened during the holidays, paramedics, ambulance technicians, doctors & nurses who all help with anyone suffering from the cold or who have colds/flu. For a little diversity - it's really icy here, how about images of a Ski instructor, snow boarders and equipment that helps us stay safe on snow/ice, how not to slip over and how to have fun.

A small fir tree branch could add to your role & sensory/aromatic play and open up positive imagery for real trees outside, the forestry commission - tree fellers, sellers, loggers & getting trees to the shops - hibernating animals habitat. Put the branch end into a pot of clay/playdough to help it stand up.

No punchline that I could find .. How does a snowplough driver get to work - from 2007 ... & Highways agency Do you have any small scale vehicles that could adapt to become snow ploughs, bulldozers, diggers, lorrys for salt gritting that could sit alongside the other cars?

What aromas or scents do you associate with winter?

Peppermint can smell 'cold, you could include some essence/extract .. or other seasonal essences - almond, orange in a tray of ice cubes for the cars to also drive through or for the Children to build walls with.

Hope you have a fab time with it and regards to your husband

Best wishes xx

Many thanks to you both for taking the time to reply - I feel more confident about things now!

Your suggestions are fantastic, thanks again, and I will be back on here after my assessment to let you know how it went!

Happy new year to you.

Phew! I am glad to say the interest table is all done and over now! My assessor actually made it down in the snow, bless her!

It went really well, the children were interested! Rather than using fake snow, I could use the real stuff, and lots of it! The children enjoyed talking about it, their experiences of sledging, talking about why it falls as snow rather than rain etc. I also had the hibernating animals and pictures of vets with animals, and explained why animals hibernate etc etc.

It went really well and I am so relieved it's over.

Thanks again for your help and support

Andrea xx
