The Children Leaving Care Act 2000 places the local authority under a duty to continue working alongside the young person as they are leaving care, and following the years after they leave until they turn 21. The act stipulates that both social services and their residence must support them in developing a leaving care pathway plan which will inform them of the process they will follow immediately after leaving. This pathway plan will help young people understand how things will work, and will help reassure them that they are still going to receive support. The Children Leaving Care Act places local authorities under a duty to maintain contact with the young person until they reach the age of 21, and to persistently attempt to reinitiate contact should it be lost before they reach this age.

It heavily influences the provision of residential care when the young person reaches an age where they are ready to move on to independent living. The act places local authorities and residential care settings under a duty to ensure the young person is provided for financially until they reach the age of 18 when they become eligible for state benefits such as income support or job seekers allowance. They are also duty bound to develop a Pathway Plan, with the young person’s input, to provide them with a plan for their move to independence which they are able to understand.

Hi the information in this PDF might help you explore the support that's provided in your setting for looked after children prior to them leaving care http://quals.onefile.co.uk/pdf/unit/CYPW_059.pdf and this page of the NSPCC goes into detail about the current legislation https://www.nspcc.org.uk/preventing-...licy-guidance/

Best wishes xx
