Boat making activity

Outdoor Games for Preschool, Early Years and all weathers ..

Boat making activities

This activity idea will need a little planning, please adapt it to suit the age of children and young people that you are with.

Provide tools and materials to assemble boats for water play. Even after generous mast trimming ours continues to fall to one side unless the sail was completely removed :) lol ..a wider or less narrow plank needed next time ..

Access to the following tools will be helpful:
Hand saw
Drill and drill bit
Glue gun
Scissors or secateurs
Sewing machine or needle and thread

Materials needed
Wood offcuts
Bottle lids and pots
Bamboo, drinking straws, other garden poles for boat masts.
Fabric for sails

Hull, mast, sails ..

Age appropriate:
Where needed pre-saw, pre-drill, pre-cut, pre-sew the sails and build your setting a construction, jigsaw type resource box full of potential boats ..
Add drilled bottle tops and pots for prompting imaginative play:
Ship's wheel, helm, crows nest, cargo holders ..

This activity involves children in the risk of handling wood that could splinter.
Please check
that the wood is clean, or the origin of paint can be traced to proove it is lead free.

Extend, providing glue and sandpaper for permanence of the masts, sails and smoothness of the wood.
Felt pens or crayons to decorate and mark make on the fabric of the sails.

For older children, plan for guided assistance where needed to help operate the hand saws, scissors/secateurs, drills, glue guns and sewing machine/needle and thread.

Let parents know what is planned and invite them to join in.
Please check any policies that require activity permission: first aid treatment.

Saw, dril, cut and sew ..
