Ribbons Treasure Basket

Sewing patterns and stitch projects for all ages: Preschool through to home use ..

Ribbons and Strings Treasure Basket
This is great way to explore a range of 'threads and their various uses.
Using a simple knot - Cow Hitch, the Children can find out how tie, secure and decorate a storage basket !

Treasure basket ribbons

Treasure baskets in themselves are a fantastic resource for collecting related or random items in.
The Children can discover textures, shape, colour, weight, size and experience all the sensory elements of each item in their own time.

Getting your basket together ..

Any keen fabric hobbiest will have a 'stock of sewing 'treasures.
If you feel your collection could do with a burst of 'new, ask if a request for donations can be given out.
Wherever possible include an invitation for volunteers to get in touch and see about coming in to talk about the basket contents and how they are used.

Making The Treasure Basket
Tie two chunkier lengths of cord across a small or larger basket.

Empty wicker basket with two lengths of cord tied on ..

Fill with the various lengths of threads you have collected..
Fill with a selection of textured threads ..

Items included in our basket are:
Garden Twine - brown & green
 Nylon string
 Satin Ribbon
 Cord
 Wool
Materials that rip and cut easily into strips.
 Lace
 Embroidery strips
 Curling ribbon

ADDITIONAL Tools not shown
 Child friendly scissors
Spools to wind the ribbon onto.

Cow Hitch Knot
This is the simple knot procedure that the children can use to fasten the lengths of materials to the basket cord and handles.

Show them slowly how to cut a 'sensible length of string (or other from the basket collection)
and how to double it - matching the ends together.
Slip the loop of the doubled string under the cord ..
Pass the 'Loop' underneath what they are tying it to ...
Pass the two loose ends up and through the loop ...
Fold up the loose ends and slot them through the loop ..
Pull gently downwards - manoevering it to help tighten the forming knot ..
Pull downwards, gently so that the cord doesn't break away !

Eventually the knot will tighten around the cord and stay in place ..
Manoevure the string so that a knot is formed on the cord.

*Loop - is a keyword to the knot technique and the Children may or may not be familiar with what it is.
Finger trace the outline of the string's loop and explain that it works by 'looping over and around things.

Have fun and if you want to let us know what other activities you planned using Cow hitch, please feel free to get in touch or post in our forums ...

RISK - This basket idea is not suitable for the younger Children due to the risk of chewing & choking on the threads.
Please supervise scissor use wherever it is felt necessary.
Try to avoid elastics unless well supervised.

The Cow hitch knot is also used in our new Mini eTopic - Paw Print Lions and Jungle Activities.
A good purposeful activity for distraction strategies, intervention and creative freeflow play.
