Fir Cone Collage
Craft activity for Preschool and Early Years: Children and Adults
This craft activity uses a plain outline template of a fircone and a mixture of papers to collage with.
Let the Children cut out lots of triangles to build up their own individual fir cone appearance.
A template for the fir cone segment has been included – but please only use this with Children and adults that would enjoy the more time consuming aspects.
ACTIVITY IDEAS: Lay the ‘cone segments out on the fir cone template before gluing in place ~ see which way works best - layering the segments from the top to bottom or bottom to top .. or randomly ! Which recreates the look of a real fir cone more closely? Hold the real cone upside down and shake it - explain that is this is one way the seeds can fall out of the cone to start growing in the soil below. Do the Children think they can put seeds into their fir cone ?
You will need
A variety of collaging papers, cards, fabrics, felts, foils and plastics !
We used: Star printed tissue paper,
Old paper bags/envelopes,
Cotton fabric,
Christmas wrapping paper
Sandpaper
2 Fir cone templates
Hole punch
Cord or string
Pen, glue and Scissors
A real fir cone to help show what the activity is based on.
If you use fabric, pre cut some segments out for the Children as you may find they struggle with cutting material.
1. Cut out 2 fir cone templates from card.
2. Punch a hole in the top of them both and join together with a piece of cord/string.
3. Write your greeting, child’s name or other information about the activity on the back of one template.
4. Using the collage papers and glitter if wanted – cut out triangles and glue into place on the upper template.
5. Use the segment template for a more precise outcome – if you have adults making these cones for a display or fundraising game the segment template can enable many uniformed shapes to be cut out at once.
Displaying the Fir Cones
If you have a Christmas tree – artificial or real – hang the Fir cones on a decorations. Use a wicker basket and display the collage fir cones along with real ones.
