Nearly 150 years ago, George Cadbury and his brother Richard took over their father's small business based in the Birmingham City Centre.
Expanding into one of the world's largest chocolate manufacturers, the Cadbury legacy is one steeped in history beyond the few cocoa beans from which it started.
The success of the Cadbury business brought the brothers to move the factory base out of their cramped living and working conditions, into a new green field site 4 miles south of Birmingham, which they called Bournville.
Running their factory using innovative management techniques, they created the village around the factory, initially for the workers, but soon for the whole community.
To celebrate the relationship between the world famous village and the confectionery company, Cadbury World and The Bournville Village Trust will unveil a new attraction that will give a broader picture of the Quaker values that shaped the village's development, and the growth of the company.
Launching October 10th, The Bournville Experience will be fully interactive, allowing visitors to explore the development of the village, to understand the principles that shaped Bournville, and remain in place today.
Visitors will also be able to step back in time to view an amazing display of historical artefacts and can even step into the shoes of Bournville residents by marvelling at the 'Suggested Rules of Health,' a list of guidelines that village residents were encouraged to study for a 'healthier and more cheerful' life.
The rules have some amazing parallels with modern concerns on obesity and intoxicating substances. They even include such advice as 'Eat slowly and always get up from a meal with an appetite'
A great day out for all the family, The Bournville Experience, at Cadbury World, is an excellent way to celebrate the unique development of Bournville and to understand how the ideas of George Cadbury a century ago were way ahead of their time. Many of the principles of the Bournville village are just as relevant in developing thriving communities today and for the future.
