Turtle's Journey ~ Catch & Count

Outdoor Games for Preschool, Early Years and all weathers ..

Turtle's Journey ~ Catch and Count
Preschool games for outdoor fun ..
Catch, count and order ..
Using the Turtle Templates from Mischief Mouse's page
you can create a great outdoor fishing activity.

Colour Turtle template

Follow the instructions to make a set of 10 or more turtles.
With a permanent marker number the surface of the foam & laminated turtle.
Number your turtles ..
Add a bucket & small fishing net per child.
Then let them free to catch and order the turtles!

Catch and Count ~ basic freeplay activity.
Let the children use the nets and buckets to scoop the turtles from the water.
Spinkle on glitter & blue sequins to the surface of the water to add interest ~ alternatively you can add a few drops of food colouring.

Ordering ~ positional and numerical skills - help and guidance may be needed.
Ask the children to order the numbers as they catch them - this will be slightly random and a full sequence can only be guaranteed if it is a solo activity !
Prepare a numberline before hand so that the younger children can match up the turtle numbers against the numberline.

 Addition + Subtraction
Have older children add up all of their turtle's numbers.
Extend the activity using the numberline to include addition & subtraction.
Include pens and paper for them to record their findings !

 Conservational
Make the Turtles in differing sizes/colours and let the children mark off how many Large, Medium and Small ones there are ~ Prepare a checklist type sheet before hand.
Introduce the idea of monitoring and that the information they have collected can help protect the Turtles.
Learning to release the turtles once the activity has been completed... also lets the next child have a go !!

~ This activity is best done in a small circular paddling pool ~
Please carry out any necessary risk assessments
& ensure a staff member supervises the water at all times.
