Dragonfly's Lacy wings ~ Craft Activity

Craft activities for Preschool and Early Years: Projects that help explore materials and properties...

Dragonfly's Lacy Wings
Child and Adult Craft Activity

A sewing craft - exploring the wing structure and living environment of dragonflies.
A simple craft that can also be done as a large group activity.
Chance to look at  some of natural items found on the beach and musical instrument making

You will need
Copies of the dragonfly wing cut out in heavy paper
Netting - window nets, stiff net, fish net, onion/orange nets!
Strong clear adhesive glue or pva if children are to make the base Dragonfly.

Children will need
A pre-made set of dragonfly wings each ~ the focus of this craft activity is based upon the sewing aspect.
But you could split the craft into two separate daily events and make the wings together one day – leave to dry overnight and then sew at the next opportunity.

Large blunt needles (darning sized needles)
 Variety of brightly colored wool

To make the wings

Print off the wing template and place the straight edge against thick/heavy paper and cut out. Also cut out the centre part so that when it is opened (the true template) it looks like a stencil!
Cut out 2 true templates per dragonfly.
Place a layer of glue all around the border edge of one wing and stick it to the flat net. Match up the other wing on the reverse side of the net (as if making a sandwich!) once dry cut out the whole wing trimming any frayed part of the net as you go around.

Join the wings to the netting and use to decorate with thread ...

ASSEMBLE DRAGONFLY

Photocopy the Dragonfly body and glue down the centre line of the now doubled wings.
Offer the children the different coloured wool and explain how to thread their blunted needle and sew the wool through the net of the wings
~ if you do not have any needles, choose a net with a large ‘holey’ weave and wind tape around one end of a length of wool -like a shoe lace, so that they can thread the wool through with fingers.
Colour the body with pencils/crayons etc.
Show the children pictures of real dragonflies so that they have the opportunity to copy the patterns and colors.
Point out the vein effect their wings have and liken them to a leaf’s vein.
Do the children know where dragonflies like to live (by water) and have they ever seen one before ?

Hang and decorate your ceiling and pond display boards !!
