ON THE FARM
Home activities

For the topic of ‘On the farm’ see how many of these activity ideas you can do with your child to help them learn about farms, what they are and the work involved in running one!
   Around the Supermarket
When you go out to the shops, stop for a while to look at the packaging and types of products available.
1. Is there a cow on a milk carton?
2. A chicken on the box of eggs?
3. An ear of corn on a cereal packet?
  Out and About
1. Whilst outside, look around and see what sort of animals you can both see, even domestic pets have a part to play on a farm:-

Dogs to round up the sheep
Cats to chase away the mice from the farmer’s barns.
Chickens, Geese, Ducks – lay eggs
Rabbits – that burrow in the farmers fields!
Cows – that give us milk
Horses that help the farmer get around
Goats give us milk
Sheep their fleece makes wool
 ................
2. Use your journey time to chat about the scenery outside.
Hedges – and how farmers use hedges and ditches to separate their fields.

If you are travelling through housing estates ask you child what they think the area would look like without all the houses on and if they think farmers would of once used that land to grow crops or raise animals.

   Meal Times
When preparing and serving meals, ask you child if they know what the food is and where it came from.
Eggs - how some chickens live on farms and lay their eggs in nests?
The Flour that makes the toast and bread they eat, is made from wheat that grows in the farmer’s field.
Cheese, yoghurt and ice cream is made from milk
Vegetables are grown in the farmer’s fields and harvested by people and tractors!

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Play ‘Farms’ with small plastic toy animals.
If the weather is good – let them do this outside where they can find some dirt to drive their tractor through and grass for the cows to eat! Twigs and stones make great fences and walls!

Junk model a tractor with an old cereal box and circles of paper - 2 big back tyres and 2 smaller front tyres!

Grow carrot tops! – Cut the green stalk end off of a fresh carrot and leave it in a shallow tray of water – watch as the stalks begin sprouting!

Plant Bean seeds or cress, in small pots.

COLOURING  - This cow is a Friesian … what colour should it be coloured?

VEGETABLE GAME
