Bird seed cakes

Bird seed cakes for Autumn and winter warmth ..

Break chunks of set seed loaf and build towers to feed your birds ..

  You will need
Bird seed mix
Lard or suet - vegetable based or other
Saucepan, wooden spoon and access to a microwave or cooker
Bowl and Pots / tray
String and a punch/needle

Pots, tray, seed mix and vegetable based lard

If you choose to use pots for your seed feeders, increase the amount of fat used to ensure the mix sets well and is less likely to break up once hung.
 Make the hanging thread:
Use a needle to thread a length of cord through the pot and out of the base.
Return the threa through the same hole and tie off into a knot.
When the pots are being filled, pack the fat & seed mix around the thread or string to secure it in place.

Thread the hanging cord and knot

Melt the vegetable fat and add the dry seed mix.
Stir well covering the seeds with the fat.
Scoop out into the pots or a tray and pat down to compact the mix.

Finish by selecting where to hang the feeders or where to build up your bird seed towers ..

Peanuts and squirrels : if your setting building is close to the feeders consider placing peanut nets, other nut or pumpkin seed bags further afield - closer or within the trees that the squirrels live in.
